Balancing Public Safety and Protection of Historic Places In 2002, the Federal Preservation Institution organized a pair of conferences dedicated to adjusting and adapting methods of cultural resource stewardship in order to better protect these resources from a variety of disasters ranging from the natural to the man-made, and, in particular, against acts of terrorism. These two conferences sought to emphasize that ensuring safety and seeking to preserve our cultural heritage are both attainable, and that fulfillment of one goal need not preclude the fulfillment of the other. The first of these two conferences was held in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at the Washington Capitol Hilton Hotel. The second conference was held on Wednesday, July 24 and Thursday, July 25, 2002 at the Cathedral Hill Hotel, San Francisco, CA. On this site you will find selected papers from both conferences, along with detailed summaries of many of the presentations, as well as list of the experts who participated in the program, and other bibliographic information that relates to the topic. During the Conferences, a set of Standards for security measures at cultural heritage sites were developed. These are called the "Principles for Development of Security Measures for Historic Places."
